WE GATHER AS COMMUNITY
WELCOME - Mike Chapman, Member of Joint Search Committee, Elder and Member of Wesley Congregation
As we begin our worship this afternoon, we wish to acknowledge that we are gathered today on the traditional territory of the Mississauga’s of the Anishanaabe Nation.
On behalf of the Buckhorn Pastoral Charge, I would like to welcome all who have joined us for this special service of Covenanting between the Shining Waters Presbytery, ourselves and our student minister, Patricia McLeod. Following worship we invite you to remain for a ‘pot luck’ supper.
Everyone gathered here is special to Patricia, but we’d like to take a moment to welcome Chief Phyllis Williams from Curve Lake, and elected officials of Selwyn and Trent Lakes Township Councils. Other dignitaries include Patricia's current Diaconal Mentor, the Rev. Frank Tyrrell who is the Parish Deacon, St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Peterborough and member of the General Council at the Centre for Christian Studies where Patricia is enrolled; Local Committee members Jean Porter from Pickering, Pam Hart from Peterborough and Bill Ellins from our Wesley congregation.
Our guest speaker today, Janet Whaley Jones, began her journey to ministry with Patricia during at the Five Oaks Centre, near Paris, when they both enrolled in the Licensed Lay Worship Leaders Program. Over the years they have supported each other as they have pursued their different pathways to ordered ministry. At Christmas, Janet completed her Master of Divinity degree from Emmanuel College.
We are pleased to welcome the Rev. Warren Vollmer, Chair of the Shining Waters Presbytery and the members of Presbytery, friends, family, co-learners with Patricia and our community guests.
Welcome from Curve Lake First Nations - Chief Phyllis Williams
Welcome from Selwyn Township Council – Deputy Mayor Sherry Senis, a member of our congregation
LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE
As we centre ourselves for worship, we light the Christ Candle, to remind ourselves that all we say and do is done in the light of Christ. As a church and followers of Jesus, we are called both as individuals and as a community to carry the light of Christ into the world.
CALL TO WORSHIP
God has called us--we have responded.
Some of us sing a joyful hallelujah, while others give quiet thanks to God.
Some of us seek God’s ways in the activities of our lives,
And others sense God’s ways in contemplation and prayer.
Whatever our choice, wherever we go,
God invites us to journey in the way of faithfulness, with Christ as our example
We journey with confidence, for the Spirit is ever with us.
We come together today seeking God’s guidance at this time of new beginnings.
We come as pilgrim people searching for ways to live our faith and to be the church in the midst of changing times.
We come to make a Covenant, a Promise, with one another and with God
We come to celebrate our Creator’s steadfast love. Let us worship God together.
OPENING PRAYER - Murray Whetung, Elder of the Curve Lake Congregation

DIACONAL MINISTRY IN THE UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA[1]
“We are called with all God’s people
to be responsible agents of creative transformation
support and caring
liberation and reconciliation
justice and mercy
inviting all into a pilgrimage of
dignity and well-being,
and a ministry of accompaniment.
And we are called with all God’s people
into a life of discernment and risk.
Our roots are within the church’s earliest traditions,
and we exist today within a world-wide
expression of diaconal ministry.
Diaconal ministry exists within the ministry
of the whole community and is the
responsibility of that community.
The primary task of diaconal ministry
is mutual empowerment
through education, service and pastoral care.
This includes working together
to maintain relationships that are life-giving
and sustaining of community
to meet immediate needs
and to work to create a just and loving world.
We offer an intentional commitment
to stand and be with others on the periphery.
Seeking to be faithful to the gospel,
diaconal ministry remains flexible
and responsive to the needs of the Church and the world,
wherever that may lead.”

we pray the words of the One who came to lead us
in the way of blessings and abundant life, saying together…...
Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. “We Shall Go Out with Hope of Resurrection” Voices United #586
1 We shall go out with hope of resurrection;
we shall go out, from strength to strength go on;
we shall go out and tell our stories boldly;
tales of a love that will not let us go.
We'll sing our songs of wrongs that can be righted;
we'll dream our dreams of hurts that can be healed;
we'll weave a cloth of all the world united
within the vision of new life in Christ.
2 We'll give a voice to those who have not spoken;
we'll find the words for those whose lips are sealed;
we'll make the tunes for those who sing no longer,
expressive love alive in every heart.
We'll share our joy with those who still are weeping,
raise hymns of strength for hearts that break in grief,
we'll leap and dance the resurrection story,
including all in circles of our love.
