An Evening of Lessons and Carols
December 24, 2015
WELCOME
Christmas Eve is a time to be quietly glad.
It is a time to wonder, to give thanks,
and of quiet awakening to beauty.
On this Christmas Eve, among family, friends and strangers,
may we celebrate the richness and diversity of life,
in the gift of God Emmanuel.
In the shelter of this sacred place I invite you now into
a time of joy, reflection, renewal and hope
CAROL SING
“JOY TO THE WORLD” VU 59 vs. 1, 2 & 4
1 Joy to the world! the Lord is come:
let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare him room,
and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.
2 Joy to the earth! the Saviour reigns:
let all their songs employ,
while fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy,
repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
4 He rules the earth with truth and grace,
and makes the nations prove
the glories of his righteousness
and wonders of his love, and wonders of his love,
and wonders, wonders of his love.
“O COME, ALL YE FAITHFUL” VU # 60 Verses 1 & 3
1 O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem:
come and behold him, born the King of angels;
O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.
3 Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation,
sing, all ye citizens of heaven above;
glory to God in the highest: R
CALL TO WORSHIP (RESPONSIVELY)
Come to Bethlehem to celebrate a newborn child
Come to Bethlehem and rejoice in our Creator’s gift of love!
Come to Bethlehem and sing praises for all God has done
Come to Bethlehem and fall silent in wonder and awe.
(Pause for silent reflection.)
We welcome the good news that Jesus is born. God’s Word lives!
Praise be to our Creator. Together, in song and silence, in word and wonder, let us make our way to Bethlehem this night.
Let us come together to worship Emmanuel, God with us, who summons us all with an infant’s cry.
OPENING PRAYER & LORD’S PRAYER
Creator God, we come this night, singing of our joy
and gratitude for your gifts to us:
hope and peace,
joy and love,
and most of all, the gift of yourself, incarnated in the baby found in a manger;
Emmanuel, who brought light and life for all.
From the very depths of our being we thank you and praise you
with all of our hearts, and minds,
saying together the prayer which Jesus taught his disciples and us to say…
Our Father……
“AWAY IN A MANGER” VU # 69
1 Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay,
the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.
2 The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
but little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.
I love you, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky,
and stay by my side until morning is nigh.
3 Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask you to stay
close by me for ever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in your tender care,
and fit us for heaven, to live with you there.
Lighting The Advent & Christ Candles
We have waited for weeks. We have waited all our lives for this time, this blessing. This time when we are ready to have God filling us with a new life that is ours.
Like Mary and other new mothers, we nurture this new life with hopeful belief*, peaceful living*, loving care*, and renewed joy*. The Advent candles are ablaze with light, symbolizing these gifts in our lives.
As we light the Christ candle* tonight, may we be reminded that Christ is the true centre of our lives.
God of all Good Gifts, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, may our
lives become centered on living in your hope, peace, joy and love. Amen.

CURVE LAKE:
“HARK! THE HERALD ANGELS SING” VU # 48 vs. 1
1 Hark! the herald angels sing,
'Glory to the newborn King,
peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!'
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
join the triumph of the skies;
with the angelic host proclaim,
'Christ is born in Bethlehem!'
Hark! the herald angels sing,
'Glory to the newborn King!'
1ST LESSON: ISAIAH 9:2, 6-7a [NRSV]
The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness--
on them light has shined.
6 For a child has been born for us,
a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders;
and he is named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 His authority shall grow continually,
and there shall be endless peace
for the throne of David and his kingdom.
He will establish and uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time onward and forevermore.
“IT CAME UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR” VU # 44 vs. 1 & 4
1 It came upon the midnight clear,
that glorious song of old,
from angels bending near the earth
to touch their harps of gold,
'Peace on the earth, good will to all,
from heaven's all-gracious King!'
The world in solemn stillness lay
to hear the angels sing.
4 For, lo! the days are hastening on,
by prophets seen of old,
when with the ever-circling years
shall come the time foretold,
when peace shall over all the earth
its ancient splendours fling,
and the whole world send back the song
which now the angels sing.
2ND LESSON: LUKE 2:1-7 NRSV
In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 All went to their own towns to be registered.4 Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. 5 He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
“O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM” VU 64 vs. 1 & 3
1 O little town of Bethlehem,
how still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
the silent stars go by;
yet in thy dark streets shineth
the everlasting light;
the hopes and fears of all the years
are met in thee tonight.
3 How silently, how silently
the wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
the blessed gift of heaven.
No ear may hear his coming;
but in this world of sin,
where meek souls will receive him, still
the dear Christ enters in.
A CHRISTMAS STORY – The Christmas Moccasins
“TWAS IN THE MOON OF WINTERTIME” VU 71 vs. 1 & 21
'Twas in the moon of wintertime,
when all the birds had fled,
that mighty Gitchi Manitou
sent angel choirs instead;
before their light the stars grew dim,
and wandering hunters heard the hymn:
Jesus your King is born,
Jesus is born,
in excelsis gloria.
2 Within a lodge of broken bark
the tender babe was found,
a ragged robe of rabbit skin
enwrapped his beauty round;
but as the hunter braves drew nigh,
the angel song rang loud and high: R
3RD LESSON: LUKE 2:8-14 NRSV
8 In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11 to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah,[a] the Lord. 12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host,[b] praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace among those whom he favors!”
WESLEY:
“Angels We Have Heard on High” VU # 38 vs. 1, 2 & 3
1 Angels we have heard on high
sweetly singing o'er the plains,
and the mountains in reply,
echoing their joyous strains.
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
2 Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
which inspire your heavenly song? R
3 Come to Bethlehem and see
Christ whose birth the angels sing;
come, adore on bended knee
Christ, the Lord, the newborn King. R
CURVE LAKE:
“WHILE SHEPHERDS WATCHED THEIR FLOCKS” VU # 75 vs. 1, 2, 3, 4 & 6
1 While shepherds watched their flocks by night
all seated on the ground,
the angel of the Lord came down,
and glory shone around.
2 'Fear not,' said he, for mighty dread
had seized their troubled mind;
'glad tidings of great joy I bring
to you and humankind.
3 'To you in David's town this day
is born of David's line
a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord;
and this shall be the sign:
4 'The heavenly babe you there shall find
to human view displayed,
all meanly wrapped in swaddling bands,
and in a manger laid.'
6 'All glory be to God on high,
and to the earth be peace!
Good will to all from highest heaven
begin, and never cease.'
4TH LESSON: LUKE 2: 15-20 NRSV
15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. 17 When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

MINISTRY OF MUSIC: “ O Holy Night” Cheryl Willoughby
CURVE LAKE:
“ GO, TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN” VU # 43 vs. 1 & 3
Go, tell it on the mountain,
over the hills and everywhere.
Go, tell it on the mountain
that Jesus Christ is born.
1 While shepherds kept their watching
o'er silent flocks by night,
behold, throughout the heavens
there shone a holy light. R
3 Down in a lonely manger
the humble Christ was born,
and God sent our salvation
that blessed Christmas morn. R
BENEDICTION:
We have come together this Christmas Eve
The candles have been lit – light in the depth of night.
The carols have been sung – lifting our hearts heavenward with the angels.
The much loved and familiar story has been told.
Now as we leave this time of worship and celebration we are called to be
Christmas people; to live the story, now, every day:
This hope, this peace,
This joy, this love,
Given to the world
Through Jesus, the Christ,
God with us, Emmanuel.
Amen.
“SILENT NIGHT” VU 67
(candles are lit as we sing, until all candles are lit and a circle is formed around the perimeter of the sanctuary. I invite you to repeat verse 1 as need until the circle is complete.)
1 Silent night! Holy night!
All is calm, all is bright
round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.
2 Silent night! Holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight:
glories stream from heaven afar,
heavenly hosts sing Hallelujah,
Christ the Saviour is born, Christ the Saviour is born.
3 Silent night! Holy night!
Son of God, love's pure light
radiant beams from thy holy face,
with the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
